The SS Republic sank in a hurricane off the Georgia coast in October 1865, taking a cargo of silver and gold coins to the sea floor with it. This 1860-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar came back up from that wreck after Odyssey Marine Exploration located the site in 2003, roughly 100 miles off Savannah. New Orleans struck 1,290,000 halves that year, and ordinary survivors are common enough, but only a limited group carries a documented tie to the Republic. That shipwreck pedigree is what collectors pay for here.

This half dollar shows Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design, with Liberty resting on a rock while her right hand steadies a shield marked LIBERTY and her left holds the pole and cap. Thirteen stars ring the obverse and the 1860 date sits below the rock, with the drapery folds and shield stripes still well defined. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle grips an olive branch and three arrows beneath a striped shield, framed by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and HALF DOL. below. The O mintmark of New Orleans sits just under the eagle's tail feathers.

NGC certified this piece with its Shipwreck Effect designation, the label used for Republic coins whose surfaces carry the subtle etching left by long seawater exposure. The silver remains bright and untoned, and the central devices keep sharp relief with the eagle's feathers and Liberty's gown clearly readable. What makes this one appealing is the combination of strong remaining detail and a pedigree that can be traced to a single documented 1865 loss, which few circulated Seated halves can claim. A welcome addition to any collection of shipwreck coinage or New Orleans Mint silver.
