1861-O $10 Liberty | NGC XF-40
Struck at the historic New Orleans Mint, this 1851-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle is a prized survivor from one of the most challenging branch mints for U.S. gold production. Certified by NGC in Extremely Fine 40 condition, it displays strong detail and pleasing surfaces for the grade, offering excellent eye appeal and historical significance.
The New Orleans Mint operated intermittently during the 19th century and produced a limited number of gold coins compared to Philadelphia. In 1851, just over 263,000 $10 Liberty Eagles were struck in New Orleans, and far fewer remain today in collectible condition—especially mid-grade certified examples like this one.
The obverse features Christian Gobrecht’s classic Liberty Head design, while the reverse bears the heraldic eagle and the coveted “O” mintmark, denoting its Southern origin. Coins from this era often saw extensive circulation in the economy of the pre-Civil War South, making survivors like this both historically and numismatically important.
This is a great choice for collectors of early U.S. gold, Southern branch mint issues, or those assembling a complete Liberty Eagle date-and-mintmark set.
