1-oz American Silver Eagle (Random Year)
Random-year American Silver Eagles offer the same purity and liquidity as their current-year counterparts, but at reduced premiums over spot. Each one is a one-ounce legal-tender silver dollar from the United States Mint, containing a full troy ounce of .999 fine silver. They are struck at West Point (and in some years San Francisco or Philadelphia) with no mintmark on the bullion issues, and every coin carries the U.S. Mint's guarantee of weight and purity as it has since 1986. Because no specific date is offered, orders ship from our mixed-date inventory of issues prior to the current year.
The obverse reproduces Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design from the 1916 to 1947 half dollar, showing Liberty draped in the American flag striding toward a rising sun with laurel and oak branches in her left arm, encircled by LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse appears in one of two forms depending on year of issue. Coins dated 1986 through mid-2021 carry John Mercanti's heraldic eagle with shield, thirteen stars above and the E PLURIBUS UNUM ribbon; coins from late 2021 forward carry Emily Damstra's eagle in flight approaching its nest with an oak sprig in its talons. Both reverses are inscribed UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, and ONE DOLLAR.
Weinman's Walking Liberty is one of the most admired designs in American coinage history, and pairing it with a federally guaranteed ounce of silver is what made the Silver Eagle the most widely traded silver bullion coin in the world. Every dealer in the country knows the coin on sight, which keeps resale simple and spreads tight. Coins are Brilliant Uncirculated, though older dates may show light toning, spotting, or minor handling marks that are normal and expected in random-year silver; we remove pieces where such aging is excessive. Orders of twenty ship in U.S. Mint tubes and are typically all one date, while larger orders come in sealed U.S. Mint monster boxes of 500. For those building a core position in recognized government-minted silver, American Silver Eagles are the standard against which the rest are measured.
