What Are My Old Coins Worth?
Frequently we are contacted by those looking to identify and value coins they’ve acquired in various ways. Usually, they’ve found or inherited a few old pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, etc. We understand that most visitors contacting us wouldn’t have the coin market insight to have such knowledge, nor know what we specialize in and that we don’t handle any and all coinage, so this is our attempt to explain and summarize our business and services.
Coin collecting has been a popular, but generally casual, hobby for many people for decades. It’s very common for old coins to be found, set aside to mark a memory, a lucky moment, or simply because they caught someone’s imagination at the time. Therefore, it’s very common for so many of us to “come into some old coins”. The casual nature of this collecting is also why the large majority of such coins have very little value. One is simply not going to “happen across” old pocket change worth a small fortune.
Why We Don’t Offer Appraisal Services
We understand this curiosity, but please know such casually acquired coins and collections of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, half-dollars, etc. don’t have much value, even if they date back to the early 1900s and even if they’re in coin albums. Please also understand that it’s also impossible to value a coin without seeing it in person and that appraising such coins isn’t a service that we offer.
What we recommend…Your best option is to search for “coin dealer” and/or “gold dealer” plus your zip code or city name to see if you can find a local dealer that you can contact to verify they offer appraisals and that you can visit them in person. You can also look up your coin in the Red Book of Rare Coin Prices.
